Medieval Settlement Bozok: The Origins of Astana’s History

The medieval settlement of Bozok is one of the most important archaeological and historical monuments of Kazakhstan, located within the territory of modern Astana. This ancient settlement, founded around the 10th century, is considered the predecessor of the capital and reflects the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the Kazakh land.

Bozok was situated at the crossroads of ancient trade and nomadic routes connecting the East and the West. Thanks to its advantageous location, the settlement became an important center of craftsmanship, agriculture, and spiritual life. Excavations have revealed dwellings, utility buildings, and religious structures that testify to the high level of development of the local population.

Archaeological research at Bozok has allowed scientists to reconstruct the life of medieval nomads and farmers, gaining insight into their daily activities, beliefs, and social organization. The discovery of ceramics, jewelry, and household items highlights the advanced skills and artistry of ancient craftsmen.

Today, Bozok is a unique historical and cultural site and an open-air archaeological museum. It reminds residents and visitors of the capital about the centuries-old history of the Kazakh people, their roots, and the unbroken connection between the past, present, and future of Kazakhstan.
