About the Excursion
What to Expect
This excursion will introduce you to one of Kazakhstan’s most tragic and significant memorial sites — the ALZHIR Memorial Complex, located near Astana. You will visit the museum situated on the site of the former camp where, during the years of Stalinist repressions, the wives, mothers and daughters of “enemies of the people” were imprisoned. The museum’s exhibitions feature authentic documents, personal belongings of female prisoners and reconstructed camp conditions.
The walk through the complex includes a visit to the “Arch of Sorrow” monument, railway barracks wagons, as well as a mosque and a church symbolising the multinational background of the camp’s prisoners. Upon request and prior arrangement, a meeting with local residents can be organised.
This excursion provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the history of political repressions and preserve the memory of thousands of women whose lives were connected with ALZHIR.
